Can you relate to the photograph?

I started photography quite sometime back, but the intention was to keep memories alive and be able to recall the situation. But sometimes I am surprised by the discussion of the technicalities of the camera and lenses, I wonder where photography is gone ? An expression on the face of a kid or the sunset or the brilliant changing moods of the sea,the patterns of the cloud, Can any of these technicalities create it ?, Is there one single camera or lens system that can be the eye ? Sometimes I feel someone should also have a device where we can record the smell and the temperature of the place along with the image so that we can feel as close to reality as possible.

Photography to me was to capture the different moments and experiences that one goes through.

To enjoy a photograph, you need to have a good memory and be mindful and or a deep understanding of nature( including people), else it is just another image with brightness , contrast, temperature or some such thing. You need to be able to get into the mind of the photographer to really appreciate the beauty that is captured. Unless we are equipping ourselves with that awareness of the human being on the other side of the lens we can never really appreciate the beauty of the photograph.

Relating to a photograph is like friendship, A coupe of shared moments and experiences binds friends. Similarly an awareness about the photographer and the image can build relativity to the photograph. May be that is why people like their photographs especially where they look good :).

Have you ever been alone, tired and lost ? you realize that some people look at you, listen to you but cannot help ? Now look at the photograph on top again and tell me what you think.

Why is it that technicalities take over the beauty/moment? is it lack of appreciation for the nature and awareness of human perception ? Or is it the fear that exposing that part of a person is too delicate a matter ? Is it the fear of rejection about our feelings not really matching with what others see ?

Photography has two parts: The artist in and the physicist.

The Artist: looks to capture the flavor of that moment. So this part of the photographer will be the reason behind the subject chosen for capture. It could be based on ones experience, ones emotional side.

The Physicist: Looks to capture the design of the moment. So this part of the photographer will try to work with lighting, color, aspect, orientation.

A good photographer stands at the intersection of both.

The old Roll cameras pushed the photographer to that intersection but the advent of digital cameras made it like a body without a soul as you have rightly brought up in the article!
